تعد الحقبة التاريخية التي ظهر فيها المغول كقوة عظمى على مسرح الأحداث من أهم حقب التاريخ الإسلامي، لا سيما أنها تمكنت من إزاحة أقوى الدول والإمبراطوريات التي شكلت منافساً قوياً لها أثناء عملياتها العسكرية التوسعية لاجتياح المنطقة، ابتداءً من القوى القائمة في منغوليا وبلاد الصين والقرة خطأ، ومن ثمة الدولة الخوارزمية لينتهي الأمر باحتلال الأراضي العراقية، والقضاء على الخلافة العباسية التي مثلت رأس العالم الإسلامي لامتلاكها السلطة الدينية والدنيوية، كما أن دراسة تاريخ الإمبراطورية المغولية وعملياتها العسكرية، لا سيما في أراضي العراق، لازال بحاجة إلى مزيد من البحث العميق، إذ لم يتم البحث فيه بشكل مفصل وواضح بما فيه الكفاية، بسبب عدم وجود دراسة تاريخية شاملة لعملية الاحتلال المغولي للعراق بكل أجزائه، نتيجة لقلة المصادر الإسلامية التي تناولته وندرتها في ذات الوقت، فضلاً عن تناثر الروايات التاريخية التي تطرقت لموضوع الدراسة في المصادر التاريخية.من هذا المنطلق بدأت فكرة الكتابة والبحث تراودني في هذا الموضوع، كلما طرق سمعي ذكر المغول واحتلالهم لبغداد الذي اخذ يتردد كثيراً بعد الاحتلال الأمريكي للعراق في سنة 2003م، ودخول قواته إلى بغداد الحبيبة وتدميرها، لذا فقد جاءت الدراسـة تحت عنوان رياح الشرق دراسة تاريخية شاملة في الاحتلال المغولي للعراق ، وبناءً على هذا العنوان تحتم علينا دراسة تاريخ المغول، من خلال التطرق لأصولهم وموطنهم وقيام دولتهم وتوسعها، أما الجزء الأكبر من خطة الدراسة، فقد ركز على تفاصيل الاحتلال المغولي للعراق بشكل كامل من شماله إلى جنوبه، والقضاء على الخلافة العباسية القائمة فيه، لتظهر الدراسة بشكل لائق ذات طابع أكاديمي علمي.
