شرع الله الرهن وثيقة من أهم الوثائق في حق الدائن المرتهن؛ لأنه يجعله مطمئناً على ماله كأنه في حيازته فلا يخشى الإنكار، أو الضياع كما أنه يحث المدين على الوفاء بالدين الذي عليه حتى يتمكن من استرداد المال المرهون والانتفاع به.
وإذا كان الرهن فيه مصلحة للمرتهن فهو في الوقت نفسه يحقق مصلحة للراهن؛ لأن الراهن حين يقدم ماله للمرتهن فإنه يحفظه من البيع بأبخس الأثمان، إذ قد يلجأ الراهن إلى بيع ماله بثمن بخس لقضاء حاجته العاجلة إذا لم يجد من يقرضه.
