إسماعيل صبري باشا: ولد في مصر بمدينة القاهرة عام ١٨٥٤م، وتلقى الدروس الثانوية في المدارس المصرية، ونال شهادة الليسانس في الحقوق من كلية مدينة إكس في فرنسا سنة ١٨٧٨م، حيث وصلها مع إحدى البعثات الفرنسية، ولما عاد إلى مصر تنقل في مناصب القضاء والإدارة حيث شغل وظائف القضائيين، كما عُين رئيسًا لمحكمة الإسكندرية الأهلية، ثم محافظًا للإسكندرية، فوكيلًا لوزارة العدلية «الحقانية»، ولما بلغ الستين أحيل للتقاعد ففتح داره التي صارت منتدى الشعراء والأدباء.
يعد إسماعيل صبري من شعراء الطبقة الأولى في العصر الحديث، كان يكتب شعره على هوامش الكتب والمجلات، وينشره أصدقاؤه خلسة، حيث كان كثيرًا ما يمزق قصائده صائحًا: «إن أحسن ما عندي ما زال في صدري!» وقد امتاز شعره بقوة الخيال ورقة وعذوبة المعنى، وحب الفن والجمال، وخفة الروح، كان يكتب أحيانًا مقطوعات قصيرة، وأحيانًا أخرى قصائد طويلة، ولشعر صبري مسحة من الترف الحضري واللين والجلاء، وعلى الرغم من سهولة ألفاظه إلا أنه كان شعرًا محملًا بالمعاني الجليلة.
كما كان نثره أشد تأثيرًا في النفس وأثبت أثرًا.
وقد نظم صبري الكثير من الشعر الغنائي والأدوار والمواويل، وقال في المديح والتهاني والتقاريض والهجاء، كما قال في الوصف والاجتماعات والسياسات والإلهيات والمراثي والأناشيد.
كان شاعرنا وطنيًّا ومثاليًّا، فمثلًا لم يزر أي إنجليزي قط، وكانت له في السياسة مواقف مشرفة مثل وقعة حادثة دنشواي المؤلمة التي نظم فيها قصيدة معبرة، وقيل إن كرومر كان يريد التمهيد لجعله رئيسًا للوزارة؛ فرد عليه بالقول: «لن أكون رئيسًا للوزارة وأخسر ضميري!» توفي عام ١٩٢٣م، ودفن في مقبرة الإمام الشافعي في القاهرة، وأقيم له حفل تأبين كبير تبارى فيه الشعراء والخطباء لمواقفه النزيهة.
