إن هذا الكتاب مجموعة من الأعمدة التي قرأها ملايين الأشخاص على مدار السنوات الماضية. إن حكمة "جيم" وخبرته في موضوع معين تمنحان كتاباته مصداقية كبيرة. يُذْكر أن "جيم" كتب أعمدة عديدة حول المحن وتأثيرها رغم عدم معرفة البعض بماضيه. كان "جيم" يطمح لأن يكون لاعب كرة سلة في الدوري الأمريكي، وتمتع بالقدرات الذهنية والجسدية التي تؤهله للنجاح، كما أنه كان بطلًا أوليمبيًّا في رياضة رفع الأثقال فئة الوزن الثقيل، لكن خططه اصطدمت بتحديات كبيرة.
وفي وقت دراسته بجامعة أورال روبرتس، شُخِّصت حالة "جيم" بمرض التنكس البقعي الذي أفقده بصره. تخرج "جيم" بعدها في الجامعة بمساعدة "كريستال" التي درَّست له مواده وتزوجها لاحقًا. كان معظم المصابين بالعمى يصابون بالإحباط واليأس ويطلبون الحصول على إعانات حكومية، لكن "جيم" لم يفعل ذلك. وذات مرة صرح "جيم" لوالده (الذي كان يعمل موظفًا في جامعة أورال روبرتس) بعد إصابته بالعمى بأنه يريد أن يعمل لحساب نفسه. ومن ثم عرَّف والد "جيم" إياه بـــ "لي براكستون" أحد المساهمين الماليين في الجامعة.
كان "جيم" محظوظًا بالتعرف على "براكستون"؛ لأنه كان نموذجًا رائعًا في قهر المحن، وأسس شركات ناجحة عديدة، من بينها أحد المصارف. كما كان "لي براكستون" صديقًا مقربًا لــ "نابليون هيل". وبعد وفاة "هيل" ألقى "براكستون" خطاب تأبينه في عام 1970. لم يتعلم "براكستون" المبادئ الموجودة في كتاب فكر وازدد ثراءً 1 لـــ "نابليون هيل" فحسب، بل طبَّقها أيضًا. أوصى "براكستون" "جيم ستوفال" بقراءة كتاب فكر وازدد ثراءً الذي ساعده على تحقيق النجاح على الصعيدين المالي والشخصي.
