تصور أحداث الرواية المعضلة الأخلاقية لروديون راسكولنيكوف وهو طالب سابق فقير في سانت بيترسبيرج ، يرسم خطة لقتل مرابية عديمة الضمير من أجل مالها ، قبل قتلها يعتقد أنه بمالها يمكنه تحرير نفسه من الفقر وأن يقوم بالعديد من الأعمال الخيرة، إلا أن الحيرة والتردد والحظ يفشلون خطته لقتل يراه البطل أنه مبرر أخلاقيا .
