الدراسات التاريخية تؤكد أن حركة التأليف عند العرب بدأت منذ منتصف القرن الأول الهجري، حيث كان المصحف الشريف أول كتاب ظهر في لغة العرب، وبعد ذلك شهد القرن الثاني الهجري ظهور الكتب، وحركة التراث والتاريخ تأثرت بطريقة كتابة الحديث النبوي الشريف ، من حيث الثقة والأمانة فيما يكتب فيها.
وفي القرنين الثالث والرابع للهجرة ازدهرت حركة التأليف، خاصة بعد إقامة صناعة الورق في بغداد في عصر الرشيد وظهور جماعة الوراقين، التي كانت تمارس الاستنساخ والفهرسة، وغير ذلك من الأعمال التي يطلق عليها في مصطلحاتنا المعاصرة الببليوغرافيا.
وهذا الكتاب إطلالة على روائع كتب التراث الثقافي الضخم الذي آل إلى العرب من الأسلاف.
