يكاد يجمع أغلب الناس على أن الثروة هي النقود، إذ الرجل غني في عرفهم ما دام يملك مبلغًا وفيرًا ، وإذا استطاع إنسان أن يدفع جنيهاً أو عشرة دولارات نقدًا ثمناً لوجبة من الطعام ، فهو لاشك أغنى ممن يجد مشقة في أن يدفع بضعة قروش ثمناً لفنجان من الشاي أو شريحة خبز، وهو كذلك أعظم ثراء من ذلك الفلاح الذي يحصل على بعض حفنات من الأرز لغذائه اليومي.
وكثيرًا ما يقاس ثراء أمة أو فقرها بما تمتلكه من النقود بما في حوزتها من رصيد الذهب المختزن في مصرف الدولة، إلا أن كل تلك الثروة سواء كانت سبائك من الذهب أو أوراق نقد مطبوعة .. تلك الثروة لا قيمة ولا نفع ما لم تكن لها القوة الشرائية التي تمكن صاحب الثروة من الحصول في مقابلها على حاجاته.
