وتأتي الأهمية الاجتماعية لهذه المرحلة من كونها مساراً لمنعطفين يفترقان بزاوية مقدارها 180 درجة. فإما أن يتوجه الشاب فيها إلى الاستغلال المثمر لحيويته ونشاطه فيكون فرداً فاعلاً في المجتمع, أن أن يتجه إلى العبث واللهو غير المجدي, فيجرف معه من يعيش حوله في محيطه الاجتماعي نحو الانحراف عن جادة الصواب.
والسؤال الذي يجيب عنه الكتاب : هل نحتاج إلى استراتيجية تربوية للتعامل مع المراهقين؟
