الخوف من أهم الانفعالات الأولية التي تعمل في صورتها الطبيعية للمحافظة على الحياة ، فالحيوانات تخاف وتفزع، ثم تجفل هاربة لتأوي إلى مكان يعصمها من الشر الذي يلاحقها، والطفل يخاف من الأصوات المرتفعة المفاجئة، ويخاف أن يقع على الأرض من مكان مرتفع، ويصرخ في فرغ أو يهرب، شأنه في ذلك شأن بقية الحيوانات.
وعندما يخاف الإنسان فإنه يصيح ويصرخ ويتأوه، وقد يطلق ساقيه للريح وهو يهرب، وقد تنتابه رعدة شديدة تهز نفسه هزاً شاقاً مضنياً. يتحدث وهو خائف فترتعش الكلمات على شفتيه، ويظهر الفزع في عينه، وتتقلص عضلات وجهه.
