ترتبط الحضارة ارتباطاً وثيقاً بالتاريخ، حيث أنّها جزء ونتاج من التاريخ، ، ومن الممكن أن نُعرّف الحضارة بأنّها ثمرة جهود الإنسان لتحسين ظروف الحياة بشكل مادي أو معنوي.
ويُمكن القول أن الحضارة اليوم لم تعد تقتصر على تناقضها لمعنى البداوة فقط، وإنما تعبّر أيضاً عن ارتقاء المجتمعات وتطورها في جوانب الحياة المادية، والمعنوية المُختلفة، كما أن الحضارة ليست حكراً لأجناسٍ مُعينةٍ فتكون قادرة على صنعها وأخرى غير قادرة، وإنما هي ملك للأمم التي تأخذ بأسباب العلم على اختلاف العصور، فالحضارة الإنسانية لم تقم بجهود أمة واحدة وإنما ساهم كثيرٌ من الأمم في قيامها، حيث إن الحضارات الإنسانية عبارة عن حلقات متصلة مع بعضها البعض.
