تدور قصة الكاردينال الأحمر داخل شوارع مدينة خيالية ، في العاصمة ( غاليرياسك ) تبدو جنة للأثرياء وفي زواياها حصون للتعاسة مشيدة بإحكام . تشارلز غرنالد عازف بيانو وأستاذ في اكادمية ليدبرك للموسيقي ، كونه يتيما فقد تربي على يد المفتش جوناثان غريس ، إلا أنه وفورا أن بلغ منتصف العشرين قرر أن ينصاع إلى أنانية مشاعره حيال رغبته في البقاء وحيدا لذا استأجر شقة في مبني شارتير وبدأ حياة هادئة تزينها الحان مقطوعاته الموسيقية ، لكن ذلك لم يقيده أبدا بحيث استمر في زيارة الرجل الذي أكرمه بفيض من حنانه الأبوي ، حتى أنه كان يمد له يد العون لحل بعض القضايا ولم يكن بري المفتش غريس أي حرج من ذلك فهو يدرك أشد الإدراك شأن قدرته وفطنته . عندما انتصف الليل واشتدت الظلمة في الأزقة استفحل الضباب حتي تمثل كالنهر يسيل بين المباني ، استيقظ تشارلز على وقع كابوس مروع كلما ظن أنه توقف عن الظهور له في مناماته ، عاد الكابوس ليراوده كصيحة رجل مجنون توقضه مذعورا من نومة ، تلك اللقطات من ماضيه المؤلم تتشبث به كما تتشبث الوحوش بمخالبها الحادة في طرائدها ، أب سكير وأم مظلومة ـ أنتهت تلك الحياة بموت والدته أمام عينيه بسبب والده وعندما سجن بدأت صفحات حياة تشارلز تتلوث ببقع سوداء غطت على نقاءها ، حيث نقل إلى دير لرعاية الأيتام في بلدة ( سانت فليرك ) ومن هناك تقلب مع تقلبات الدهر حتي التقطه المفتش جوناثان غريس من إحدي الأزقة وقام برعايته ، فبدأ صفحة جديدة .
