بين سكان المدينة رجلٌ وُجد غريب وسط برابرة وسوقة وأغفال، لا هو من أهل الأرض ولا من أهل السماء، لا هو منهم ولا هم منه، رغم أنه منهم، عرف المال والشهرة وأعجب به الملوك قبل العامة، غزير العلم، بحر سحيق، محقق بارع، نار تحرق وأسد مطرق، زعّارة عضّ على العلم بضرس قاطع، فلا يُعرف إن كان من أهل الأرض أم من أهل السماء. ورغم العلم والجاه والسلطان ورغم أن الدنيا جاءته مستسلمة راضية طيعة إلا أنه أعرض عنها ورفض ضيافتها ولسان حاله يقول: الرحيلَ الرحيلَ، ما بقي من العمر إلا القليل. غادر المدينة الجاهلة وهو يبكي بكاء ابن عائشة الحرة على فقدان الأندلسي، ويتساءل: تُرى هل طُردت من هذه المدينة كما يُخرج البحر الخبث؟! هؤلاء قوم غرب وأنا شرق والشرق شرق والغرب غرب ولن يلتقيا، هم رعاع سقاط جهال لا يتلون كتابا حق تلاوته ولا يستخدمون عقلا حقّ عليهم استعماله، قلوبهم لا تفقه شيئا وأعينهم لا تبصر شيئا، لأجل ذلك هجَرهم وقطع الوصل معهم وقرر أن يقفز قفزة كمومية لينأى بنفسه عنهم، قفزة في غياهب اللامتناهي، في اللاوجود للبحث عن الوجود، قفزة إلى عالم الملكوت، سيقفز ويقول بسم الله مجراها ومرساها، قد ترسو سفينته ويجد الحقيقة وينعم برؤية الحمامة ويستظل بظل الزيتون ويبني مدينة شعارها غصن الزيتون، وفيها سكينة الرهبان وحكمة الحكماء وأخلاق النساك، وقد تغرق السفينة في ظلمات بعضها فوق بعض فيجد شيطانا مريدا ولجة سحيقة، فالحجار الحجار وما من ثمار، لكن لا بد من المخاطرة، فأجمل ما في الحياة أن يعيش الإنسان في خطر. لذلك قرر الغزالي، وهو اسمه، ترك القرية الظالم أهلها والبحث عن الحقيقة. غادر أبواب المدينة وقرر ترك القرية والتسكع في الأرض بحثا عن الحقيقة، فالتقى بأحد حراس التناحة واسمه عزازيل، وبعد إلقاء السلام قال له: إلى أين يا عالمنا وسيدنا؟ أترحل وتترك منصبك ومقامك ومالك وأهلك وزوجتك وأبناءك؟!! والله إنك امرؤ مغرور، أأصابك الخبل والجنون والعمى؟!! الرجوع الرجوع، وما من خروج. نظر إليه الغزالي نظرة المشفق على العجوز الشمطاء الطاعنة في السن، وقال له: الخروج الخروج، وما من رجوع إنني أرى ما لا ترى.
