لا يتصور كثير من الناس ممن يعانون من اضطراب في الممارسة الجنسية أن سبب حالتهم يرجع إلي عوامل نفسية ، ويبدأ المريض بطلب العلاج لدى المتخصصين في الأمراض التناسلية أو المسالك البولية ظناً منه أنهم يعالجون مشكلته ، لكن سرعان ما يتبين أنه لا يعاني من آي أمراض موضعية في الأعضاء الجنسية ، وأن الأصل في شكواه هو الحالة النفسية .
ويكون علينا دائماً كأطباء نفسيين أن نستقبل هذه الحالات في العيادات النفسية وأن نبدأ أولاً بالتهدئة من روعهم ، وشرح العلاقة بين ما يعانون منه وبين الحالة النفسية ، فأي واحد منا يمكن أن يلاحظ ببساطة شديدة أنه إذا كان متوتراً أو خائفاً أو مشغول البال أو في حالة حزن شديد فإنه يفكر أبداً في ممارسة الجنس ولا تكون لديه الرغبة في ذلك ، هذا بالنسبة لأي فرد عادى ، أما بالنسبة لمن لديه اضطراب في الحالة النفسية فإن الرغبة والممارسة الجنسية تتأثر حتماً كما تتأثر بقية وظائف الجسم المعتادة .
