دراجة مسروقة، ومدّربٌ فَطِن
في السابع عشر من كانون الثاني/يناير، العام ألف وتسعمئة واثنين وأربعين، ولد كاسيوس مارسيلوس كلاي (Cassius Marcellus Clay).–والذي حمل اسم محمد علي كلاي (Muhammad Ali Clay) بعد إسلامه لاحقًا- في مدينة لويزفيل(Louisville)، ولاية كِنْتاكي (Kentucky) الأمريكية لأب يعمل خطاطًا وأم تعمل في خدمة العائلات الثرية من العرق الأبيض في المدينة. على عكس المتوقّع، لم يُبدِ الصبي في طفولته أي اهتمام بالرياضة من أي نوع بل كان أكثر ميلًا لقراءة القصص الهزلية ((The Comics.
في العام ألف وتسعمئة وأربعة وخمسين، كان كاسيوس (Cassius) وصديقه خارجين من معرض ترفيهي أقيم في المدينة ليفاجآ بسرقة دراجته الجديدة. في خضم غضبه ورغبته الشديدة في معرفة السارق ومعاقبته، قادت الصدفة كاسيوس (Cassius) للتعرف إلى الضابط جو مارتن (Joe Martin)، والذي كان يعمل مدربَ ملاكمة في أحد النوادي الرياضية وذلك حين اقترحت عليه إحدى السيدات التبليغ عن الحادثة بشكل رسمي. بعد أن استمع مارتن إلى رواية الفتى ذي الاثني عشر عامًا ورغبته في أن يبُرْح سارق الدراجة ضربًا عند الإمساك به، نصحه الضابط بأن يتعلّم أصول القتال كي يحصّل ثأره. وهكذا، انضم كاسيوس (Cassius) إلى النادي الرياضي ليتعلّم الملاكمة على يد مارتن Martin)) الذي سيكون مدربه الأوّل والشاهد على موهبته اليافعة......
