مضى حين من الدهر كان الناس لا يشكّون في أن الفلسفة نشأت أول ما نشأت ببلاد اليونان، أو بعبارة أدق بأيونيا المستعمرة اليونانية التي أسسها مهاجرو اليونان الأولون بآسيا الصغرى ، واستمر هذا الرأي ينمو ويشتد ويستقر في النفوس حقيقة لا ريب فيها تساعده عوامل مختلفة ؛ منها استعلاء الغربي واعتقاده نفسه خير الناس، واستخدام الشرقي وظنه السوء بنفسه، وذلك بأن للقوة أثرها في نفس القوي والضعيف على سواء .. وهذا الرأي على غلوّه له أنصار كثر في الغرب.
وإن كانت الحضارة القديمة قد بلغت الأوج في بلاد الإغريق، إلا أنها وُلدت ونمت في الشرق ؛ ونحن نعلم اليوم أنه في العصر الذي لم يكن فيه اليونان إلا جهلة وبرابرة كانت هناك حضارات لامعة زاهرة على ضفاف النيل وفي سهول کلديا .
