نشأت منذ أقدم العصور في الحوض الشرقي للبحر المتوسط في الهلال الخصيب وغرب آسيا ومصر حضارات عظيمة تدين لها مدينة أوربا وأمريكا بل العالم أجمع بالشيء الكثير، فهناك نشأت الزراعة والتجارة والصناعة والكتابة والهندسة وفن النحت والبناء والأدب والموسيقى والفلك والتقويم، وعرفت الخيل والمركبات والنقود والورق والكتب وعقيدة التوحيد وأدوات التسلية والخمر.
ولاشك من توافر ظروف وعوامل مشتركة في قيام هذه الحضارات ، وهذه الظروف لم تجعل مواطن هذه الحضارات في عزلة تامة عن العالم الخارجي.. تلك العزلة التي تؤدي إلى جفاف وفتور الحضارة كما يلاحظ في حضارات الجهات الجبلية. ووجد في مصر وبلاد ما بين النهرين وكثير من جهات الحوض الشرقي للبحر المتوسط ما يدل على وجود صلة منذ أقدم العصور بينها وبين بعضها الآخر.
