حقق العرب مكانة عالمية مُتميزة في المهارات الملاحية ، إضافة إلى ما يكتنزونه من مواهب طبيعية, وما يحتفظون به من معارف موروثة، وتفوقوا في فنون وهندسة بناء السفن الشراعية، وكانوا أول من تعلم ركوب البحر، وخاضوا غمار البحار البعيدة بقواربهم البدائية المصنوعة من البردي المطلي بالقار. وأحرزوا السبق في الاستدلال بالنجوم والكواكب .. كما كانت لهم الريادة في تهذيب وتطوير الإسطرلاب، وابتكروا آلة الكمال “آلة السدسSextant“ واخترعوا البوصلة المغناطيسية, وهم أول من جزءها إلى اثنين وثلاثين جزءًا. وأول من استخدم الساعة المائية في الملاحة.
ويعود لهم الفضل في رسم الخرائط الملاحية, وتثبيت الملامح الساحلية, وتوزيع خطوط العرض والطول؛ كما أن العرب هُم أول من عرف الملاحة.
