رُبما كانت الحادثة الأغرب والأكثر غموضًا من بَين الحوادث والقضايا التي مرت عليه في مسيرته المهنية، أشلاء من الجثث مبعثرة هُنا وهُناك ليس لهم أي ملامح، رائحة الحريق تعوقه من اكتمال جولته التفقدية في المكان الذي يبدو له غير مفهوم، لكنه يصر أن يرى كُل شيء قبل أن يفتح ملف التحقيق في الحادث.
ثلاث ساعات كاملة استغرقها رجال المباحث لتجميع أجزاء الجثث وحصرها، في النهاية العدد قد وصل إلى 98 جثة، كل شيء أصبح رمادًا وكُل الضحايا غير واضحة المعالم، أفواج من سيارات الشرطة والإسعاف ملأت المكان، وكانت الشمس قد اقتربت من الظهور ثم رحل الجميع وبقى هو شاردًا ينظر إلى البحر ويفكر فيما راَه حتى وجد لوحًا من الخشب يطفو على سطح المياه مُتجهًا إلى حافة الشاطئ الذي يقف عليه، انتظره حتى أتى ونظر إليه، وجد عليه عملية حسابية بحبر أحمر(100 – 2)، لم يحتج سوى دقيقة ليفهم أن هُناك جُثتين تم حملهما بعيدًا عن الـ 98 الذين عُثِرَ عليهم وهذا فرض عليه سؤالًا آخر، وهو لماذا لم تتواجد الجثتان في المكان مع الباقية؟!
