تضرب الحيوانات في الأرض تنتشر فيها وتتجول بفضل ما اكتسبت من حرية في الحركة والسعي حتى لا يزاحم بعضها بعضاً، وهي تتكاثر على مر السنين فتزداد عدًّا، لو أنها ازدحمت في رقعة ضيقة حيث كانت أسلافها لدخلت مع هؤلاء في معركة القوت فتقضي على نفسها بنفسها. وتلعب الطبيعة دوراً مهماً في هذه التحركات، فلا برد مقيم ولا حرّ مستديم، وإنما هي فصول تتتابع، فعلى الحيوان أن يختار بين طريقين، إما أن يهجر المكان إلى حيث النبات الأخضر أو أن يقضي الفصل كله في خمول وكمون حتى تحيا الأرض بنباتها، وليس لأكثرية الحيوانات القدرة على هذا الخمول فترة تطول من الزمن، بل إن بضعة أيام من جوع تقضي عليها وتقتلها.
