تعتبر القاهرة في الواقع مدينة من مدن العصور الوسطى، مازالت تحتفظ في الوقت الحاضر بالكثير من طابعها ومظهرها ، ومن ثم نجد المدينة الإسلامية القديمة تسخر في الوقت الحاضر وتتحدى تأثير الغرب ، لقد أعيد بناء تلك المدينة المرة بعد الأخرى، وكانت في كل مرة تفقد جانبًا من بهائها، غير أنه قد تبقى ما من شأنه أن يرينا ماذا كانت عليه القاهرة منذ خمسمائة عام خلت .
إن غرض هذا الكتاب كما يؤكد مؤلفه " أن ألبس آثار تلك المدينة من المعاني ما يكسبها قيمة، فكثير من مباني القاهرة، وعلى الأخص تلك المساجد التي ترجع إلى عصر المماليك الأخير آية من آيات الجمال، وتعد ذاتها تحفًا فنية رائعة ، غير أن هناك في الوقت نفسه كثيرًا من القصور البالية، والمباني المتهدمة، والجدران المتداعية ..تلك الآثار التي لا تمت إلى فن العمارة بصلة ، حتى نكشف الستار عن تاريخها".
