والإنسان بطبيعته ميال إلى التطلع إلى شيء يحتمي به ويلجأ إليه كلما أعوزته الحاجة، لهذا جرت العادة في مبدأ التاريخ، أن تتخذ كل قرية من القري المصرية رمزاً لها تجعله شعاراً لأمانيها، تقدم إليه فروض الطاعة والولاء. ولما كان بعض هذه المعبودات مزايا خاصة، لم تلبث أن امتد نفوذها وراء مناطقها. وكلما زادت القرية سطوة وقوة، كلما زاد سلطان معبودها، حتى أصبح بعض تلك المعبودات آلهة عامة بمصر، وتجمعت حولها الأساطير الدينية التي نسب منشئوها إلى أقدم العصور.
