الإنسان ميال بطبيعته إلى تزيين حياته فلا يكتفي بالضروريات ، بل يريد أن يمتع حواسه بكل شيء يجلب له الفرح ، فتجد هذا الرجل الفطري قد دبت فيه روح تحلية حياته وزخرفتها فكان ينحت آلات الصيد ، وكان يثقب حجارة مستديرة الشكل ليصنع منها عقوداً تتزين بها نسوته ، وكان يحفر على الرماح الحجرية أشكالاً هندسية تسر نظره ، وكان ينقش داخل الكهوف التي يسكنها صور الحيوانات التي يراها في الجبال والغابات المجاورة لمسكنه .
وقد عثر المنقبون على كثير من هذه المصنوعات الفنية والنقوش في كهوف الطميرة بإسبانيا وكذلك في جنوب فرنسا. ففكرة تحلية الحياة وزخرفتها هي الغرض الأول من الفن ويوجد بجانب هذا فكرة أخرى إلا وهي عبادة الخالق وتقديس الموتى وهى الغرض الثاني من الفن .
