لكن تاريخ البشرية في هذه المراحل الأولى لا يقتصر على دراسة تطور الانسان بيولوجيا، بل يرتبط بشكل مباشر بما خلفه لنا من أدوات حجرية وعظمية تعتمد عليها الدراسات العلمية الحديثة في تحديد معالم المجتمعات البدائية. ويبدأ هذا التاريخ باستنباط الانسان مثل هذه الأدوات المعبِّرة عن تطور حياته ونمط عيشه بالتالي، والمحددة، لنوعية علاقاته الاجتماعية. فالانسان لا يتأثر بالطبيعة ويتكيف معها فحسب، بل يؤثر فيها عن طريق تحويلها. وكي يتجنب أخطارها ويستفيد مما تقدمه له، كان لا بد لهذا الانسان من استخدام وسائل، هي عبارة عن أدوات أو أجهزة، تمكنه لا فقط من التكيف مع كل ظروف البيئة المحيطة به وشروطها، بل أن يكيف هذه البيئة بحيث تصبح الأشياء الخارجية ملائمة لاحتياجاته. وأول الأدوات التي استخدمها الانسان كانت يداه، وذلك عندما انتصب جسمه وتحررت «قائمتاه» الأماميتان اللتان تحولتا إلى يدين، وأصبح بوسعهما أن تتحركا باستقلال عن الجسم، وأن تصنعا أدوات جديدة. واليد، العضو الأول في الجسم، يعرّفها توما الأكويني باسم «عضو الأعضاء»، كما يشرح ذلك بقوله: «إنما الانسان عقل ويد». أن استنباط الأدوات واستخدامها أصبحا العمل النوعي لهذين العضوين، وضاعفا من مهارتهما. فاليد «ليست فقط أداة العمل، إنما هي أيضاً نتاج له». وبقدر ما تخصصت الأيدي في ممارسة العمل بعد أن تاكد السير عموديا وتكرس، تحول الانسان في مظهره وفي نمط حياته. وقد تطلب ذلك منه الملاحظة الدقيقة بل الضرورية لاكتشاف هذه الأدوات، وحفظ أشكالها وطرائق صنعها واستعمالها، وجَمْع ما تمّ لديه من خبرات في هذا المجال. وبفضل هذه الحركة الدائبة تطور عقل الانسان، ونمت حواسه، واتسع إدراكه، وازداد حجم دماغه، واصبح تدريجياً يتمتع بجهاز عصبي مرهف يتحكم بحركات اليد والجسم. فتحرر الأعضاء العليا وانتصاب الجسم وزيادة حجم الدماغ، كانت إذاً من العوامل التي هيأت الشروط الضرورية لتكامل شكل الانسان.
