إن علم النفس المعاصر لم يعد العلم الذي يهتم بدراسة السلوك الظاهر مثلما كانت تنظر إليه المدرسة السلوكية. ولكن بدأ علم النفس بالاهتمام بالسياق العقلي وبكيفية اكتساب واستخدام المعرفة الإنسانية وقد حصلت التغيرات في أقل من نصف قرن وامتدت هذه التغيرات إلى كل ميادين علم النفس العلمي. وبهذا فإن علم النفس المعرفي لم يقتصر على أن يكون ميدان بحث فقط ولكنه يمثل أيضاً أسلوباً جديداً في التصدي للظواهر النفسية. وهو بهذا يختلف عن النماذج السابقة مثل: الارتباطية، السلوكية وحتى نظرية الجشطالت. ومن خلال إعادة تعريف علم النفس لموضوعاته ولخلق مفاهيمه وطرائقه التي استعادت الطرائق الخاصة بالعلوم المعرفية وخاصة الطرائق المعتمدة في دراسة الذكاء الإصطناعي. وحقيقة القول أن علم النفس المعرفي لم يكن لينوجد لولا ظهور العلوم المعرفية وخاصة مع وجود الكمبيوتر الذي ظهر عام 1940 (Dupuy, 1994). وهذه الخاصية تجعل من علم النفس المعرفي ميداناً فريداً من حيث مراجعه ونماذجه النظرية التي لم يتم إستقاؤها من علم النفس فقط بل من ميادين علمية عديدة مثل اللسانيات، المنطق، الرياضيات، المعلوماتية، علوم الأعصاب (Vignaux, 1991). وعندما نتكلم اليوم عن علم النفس المعرفي فإننا نعني ميادين عديدة تُعنى بالمعرفة والادراك في مجال الذكاء الطبيعي وكذلك في مجال الذكاء الاصطناعي. ويمكن تقسيم هذه الميادين إلى ثلاث فئات أساسية حسب أندلر (Andler, 1992). تتناول الفئة الأولى الميادين النظرية مثل فلسفة الفكر، المنطق، الرياضيات. وتتناول الفئة الثانية ميادين البيولوجيا وعلوم الأعصاب، والعلوم الانسانية مثل علم نفس اللسانيات. وأخيراً تتناول الفئة الثالثة المعلوماتية وعلم الانسان الآلي (روبو) وعلم السبرنتيك (علم التوجيه).
