إن معرفة الإنسان لخصائص المراحل العمرية التي يمرّ بها مسألة هامة جدًا، فهي تساعد على توجيه سلوكاته والتحكم بها والسيطرة عليها. ويمرّ الإنسان منذ بداية ولادته إلى أن يهرم بمراحل متعدّدة، وفي هذه المراحل يحدث الكثير من التغيرات الجسدية، والنفسية، والعقلية، التي تعود إلى عوامل وراثية وبيئية، بالإمكان الاطلاع عليها ودراستها بواسطة المناهج العلمية المستخدمة من قبل علماء نفس ال نموّ الذين اهتموا بدراسة المراحل العمرية وعملوا على توضيح خصائصها واضطراباتها أيضًا، بما في ذلك مرحلة الشيخوخة.
من جهة أخرى، يعتبر علم نفس ال نموّ فرعًا من فروع علم النفس الذي يهتم بدراسة التغيّرات والتبدّلات التي تطرأ على السلوك الإنساني منذ مرحلة الولادة وحتى مرحلة الشيخوخة. وتشمل هذه التغيّرات كل جوانب شخصية الإنسان، وإن كانت لا تحدث بنفس الوتيرة وبنفس المعدّل. وظهر علم نفس ال نموّ في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وكان تركيزه مقتصرًا على دراسة مرحلة الطفولة. وبعد الحرب العالمية الأولى بفترة قصيرة بدأت البحوث حول المراهقة في الظهور، وخلال الفترة الممتدّة ما بين الحربين العالميتين الأولى والثانية، ظهرت بعض الدراسات النفسية التي تتعلق بمرحلة الرشد. أما الاهتمام بالمسنين فلم يظهر بشكل واضح إلا منذ مطلع الستينيات من هذا القرن.
