عندما تشتّدُ الضغوط الخارجيَّة (Stress) على الإنسان، يصبح من الضروريِّ أَنْ يستعمل قدراته المعرفيَّة وخبراته للتعامل مع تلك الضغوط. وفي حال استمرارها ولمدة طويلة ومتواصلة، فإنَّ الكائن البشري قد يتعرَّض لحدوث خلل بارز على المستوى الفيزيولوجيِّ والنفسيِّ والمهنيِّ. ويطلق “هنز سيلي”(Hans Selye) (1) على هذا الخلل عبارة متلازمة التكيُّف العام (syndrome d’adaptation générale). وفي النهاية يستسلم بعض الناس للأمر الواقع ويصابون بنقص في الطاقة وبتدنِّي الإنتاجيَّة، ومنهم من يدخل في متاهة الاكتئاب، لأَنَّ استمرار الضغوط يقلِّل من فاعليَّة الدفاعات النفسيَّة أَو يكاد أنّ يشلُّها.
إنَّ المجتمع المضطرب الذي يعوزه الاستقرار السياسيّ والاقتصاديّ قد يدفع بأبنائه إِلى السلوكيات السلبيَّة والاضطرابات النفسيَّة مثل أعمال العنف والجنوح والقلق والاكتئاب والرسوب الدراسي الخ... لقد سُجّلت أكبر نسبة انتحار في الولايات المتحدة إثر الأزمة الاقتصاديَّة الكبرى التي تعرَّضت لها عام 1929. ويعتقد “ديركهايم” (1858-1917)(Durkheim) (2) أَنَّ الانتحار (الذي يكون بسبب الاكتئاب) ليس ظاهرة منعزلة عن المجتمع بل هو في صميمه. ويعتقد «كابلن» و»سادوك» (Kaplan et Sadock) (1) أنَّ عصرنا هو عصر الضغوط والإضطرابات النفسيَّة المختلفة التي تصيب الأفراد من مختلف الطبقات الإجتماعيَّة، أكانوا طلاّباً أَو مواطنين يعملون في مجالات الحياة المتعدِّدة. ويبدو أنَّ هذه الاضطرابات لا ترجع إِلى سبب واحد، فهي تتفاوت في الأسباب وفي الآثار التي تتركها في حياة الفرد، والأُسرة والمجتمع(2).
