السبب أو الغاية من تلك المشاعر النبيلة هو الحاجة إلى إكمال نقص الذات بوجود الطرف الآخر، لذا قال أفلاطون "يجعلنا الحب مكتملين" وهذا الشعور بالنقص هو سبب التجاذب بين المتحابين، وأكد سارتر هذا المعنى بقوله: "نحن لا نحب إلا هرباً من وحدتنا".
وهذا الكتاب ينطلق في مضمونه من نفس السؤال : لماذا نحب ؟ تأكيدا لأهميته ثم يعقبه بسؤال آخر: هل نبحث في الحب مع الذين يشبهوننا أم مع أضدادنا؟ وتناقش فصول الكتاب موضوع الحب لتصل إلى هدفها وهو "السعادة الزوجية" وكيف تتحقق، فالسعادة متعلقة بالبهجة وراحة البال والسكون الداخلي للنفس.
