نهج المؤلف في هذا الكتاب منهجاً يخالف ما يسير عليه علماء الفنون والآثار في العصر الحاضر؛ فليس التصوير عنده نقوشاً ورسوماً على الجدران وفي الكتب والألوح ، بل نراه يعرض في كتابه - فوق ذلك كله- للرسوم الزخرفية الآدمية والحيوانية أينما كانت .. والمعروف أن التصوير في العصر الإسلامي كان أكثر ازدهاراً بين الشعوب الإيرانية والهندية والتركية، فلم يظفر العرب منه إلا بنصيب محدود؛ ولكن المؤلف وقف في كتابه هذا عند "الناطقين بالضاد"، "ليدحض قول القائلين بقصور العرب في هذا الفن البديع".
وغنى عن البيان أن المؤلف كان حجة في اللغة والأدب، واسع الاطلاع على كتب التاريخ والبلدان، نافذ البصيرة، دقيق الملاحظة .
