جاك فوتريل: كاتِبٌ أَمرِيكيٌّ وُلِدَ عَامَ ١٨٧٥م فِي مُقاطَعةِ بايك بجُورجِيا، ومَاتَ عَامَ ١٩١٢م فِي شَمالِ الأَطلنْطِيِّ فِي مَأْساةِ غَرقِ البَاخِرةِ تيتانيك.
بَدأَ فوتريل حَياتَهُ المِهنيَّةَ فِي سِنِّ الثَّامِنةَ عَشْرَة، عِندَما حَصلَ عَلى وَظِيفةٍ فِي مَجلَّةِ «ذي أتلانتا جورنال». فِي العَامِ التَّالِي، عَمِلَ فِي صَحِيفةِ «ذا بوسطن بوست»، لَكِنَّه عَادَ بَعدَ مُدَّةٍ قَصِيرةٍ إِلى مَجلَّتِه الأُولَى، حَيثُ أَنْشأَ أوَّلَ قِسْمٍ لِأَخْبارِ الرِّياضةِ بِها.
انْتَقلَ جاك إِلى صَحِيفةِ «ذا نيويورك هيرالد»، وبَعدَها بوقْتٍ قَصِيرٍ بَدأَ فِي كِتابةِ القِصَصِ البُولِيسيَّة، وفِي عامِ ١٩٠٢، قَبِلَ مَنصِبَ مُدِيرِ مَسْرحٍ جوَّالٍ صَغِيرٍ في مَدِينةِ ريتشموند بوِلايةِ فرجينيا، حَيثُ كَتبَ عِدَّةَ مَسْرحيَّات، واشْترَكَ بالتَّمثِيلِ بِها. بَعدَ عامَيْنِ قَضاهُما فِي المَسْرَح، انْضَمَّ إِلى الطَّاقِمِ التَّحرِيريِّ لجَرِيدةِ «بوسطن أمريكان»، وفِي تِلكَ الفَتْرة، بَدأَ يَكْتبُ سِلْسلةً مِنَ القِصَصِ بَطَلُها شَخْصيَّةٌ تُدْعَى «آلةَ التَّفْكِير»؛ وهُوَ اسْمٌ لمُخْبرٍ سِريٍّ ظَهرَ فِي أَكْثرَ مِن أَرْبعِينَ قِصَّةً مِن قِصَصِه، كَما نُشِرَتْ لَه عِدَّةُ قِصَصٍ فِي الجَرِيدة. أصْبَحَ جاك رِوائِيًّا مَعْروفًا وبَارِزًا فِي أَوائِلِ القَرْنِ العِشْرِين.
