إدوين إبوت: عالم وأستاذ ومتخصص في اللاهوت نشرت له كثير من المؤلفات، ولكن تبقى «الأرض المسطحة» أشهر مؤلفاته. وُلِد إبوت عامَ ١٨٣٨م، والتحق في سن الثانية عشرة بمدرسة سيتي أوف لندن، وسرعان ما أظهر تفوقًا، ولا سيَّما في الرياضيات، وحصل عام ١٨٥٧م على منحة من جامعة كامبريدج حيث ركز على الدراسات الكلاسيكية. رُسِم إبوت قسيسًا عام ١٨٦٣م، لكنه ظل يتكسب عيشه من عمله معلمًا، ونال في عمله سمعة طيبة. وتوفي عامَ ١٩٢٦م.

منذ ظهورها عام ١٨٨٤ سحرت رواية «الأرض المسطحة: قصة خيالية متعددة الأبعاد» القراء والعلماء على السواء وبهرتهم بمزجها الإبداعي بين الواقع والخيال، ومع أنها تبدو للوهلة الأولى أداة ذكية لتعليم مبادئ الرياضيات والعلوم، إلا أن النظرة المتعمقة تُظهر أنها تجربة أدبية ممتعة تحفز العقل، وتسخر الرواية على لسان بطلها من المجتمع الفيكتوري الذي كان في ذلك الوقت نهبًا لرياح التغيير.
كانت رواية الأرض المسطحة لمدة تربو على قرن كامل مصدرًا للإمتاع والإلهام ولا زالت حتى الآن تتمتع بمكانتها المستحقة في التاريخ الأدبي والعلمي والفلسفي، وهي تحلق بالقراء في عالم الخيال دون أن يبرحوا أماكنهم.
