يقدر عمر الأرض بنحو ألفي مليون عام اصطلح الجيولوجيون على تقسيمه إلى أزمنة أو دهور طويلة وهذه قسموها بدورها إلى أقسام فرعية ، وقد أخذت الأرض منذ نشأتها تتجه نحو البرودة التدريجية بوجه عام ولكنها تعرضت لذبذبات طويلة الأجل تناوبت فيها فترات اشتدت برودتها فتقدم غطاء الجليد فيها نحو العروض ذات الحرارة المعتدلة حالياً وفترات مال المناخ فيها إلى الدفء نسبياً فتراجع الجليد إلى العروض الباردة، وكانت آخر هذه الذبذبات هي تلك التي حدثت في آخر الأزمنة الجيولوجية وتعرف لدى الباحثين باسم العصور الجليدية .
ولم تبدأ الحياة على سطح الأرض منذ نشأتها، وحين بدأت كانت عبارة عن كائنات بسيطة التكوين ثم أخذت الكائنات المعقدة في الظهور، وبعد ذلك وجدت كائنات شبيهة بالإنسان ولكنها كانت أقرب إلى القردة العليا ثم ظهرت كائنات تعد أسلافاً للانسان الحديث إلا أن تلك المخلوقات الشبيهة بالإنسان وهذه الأسلاف انقرضت قبل الإنسان الحديث ولا يوجد من الأدلة القاطعة ما يؤكد صلتها به، وقد حاول الباحثون وما زالوا يحاولون العثور على ما يعتبرونه الحلقة المفقودة بينها وبين الإنسان ولكن لم يتحقق ذلك حتى الآن
