أثناء زيارتي مكتبة نيويورك العامة، بحثاً عن كتب دوَّنها رحالة زاروا منطقة الشرق، لفت إهتمامي كتاب طبع في لندن عام 1844 عنوانه:
The Modern Syrians, or The Native Society in Damas..cus. Aleppo and the Mountains of the Druses
وما أثار إهتمامي، أكثر، هو عدم وجود اسم للمؤلف إذ اكتفى الناشر بأن ذكر على الغلاف "بقلم طالب دراسات شرقية"، وكان مؤلف الكتاب قد قام برحلة إلى سورية وجبل لبنان في الأعوام 1841 و1842 و 1843.
والأمر الذي يثير الإستغراب، هو السبب الذي جعل المؤلف لا يذكر اسمه، ولا هدفه من هذه الرحلة، التي استمرت طوال ثلاث سنوات، إنطلاقاً من الإسكندرية، ووصولاً إلى بيروت، التي انطلق منها إلى جبل لبنان ودمشق وحلب والساحل السوري وصولاً إلى السويدية وأنطاكية والإسكندرية، فإذا كان الهدف من رحلته، هو الإطلاع على أحوال الناس والأوضاع السياسية السائدة في جبل لبنان وسورية عامة، وتدوين ملاحظاته وإنطباعاته عنها، فلماذا لم يذكر اسمه لكي يُعترف بفضله، أم كان هدفه تعلم اللغة العربية، أم غير ذلك من الأهداف غير المعلنة للرحّالة؟...
في الأحوال كلها، ستظل هناك أسئلة كثيرة وتكهنات أكثر، ولكن ما يهمنا، هو ما دوّنه الكاتب من أحداث وإنطباعات، قد تلقي الأضواء على فترة لم تحظ بالكثير من عناية الباحثين.
ولعل الكتاب يوفر للباحثين والدارسين المهتمين مادة هامة عن تلك الفترة التاريخية.
