موضوع هذا البحث هو أدب الأطفال في الأدب العربي، أو أدب الأطفال العربي، ويتألف من ثلاثة أقسام: أوَّلها مفهوم أدب الأطفال وخصوصيَّته ودوره...،وثانيها أدب الأطفال والأدب العربي القديم وإفادته من التراثين: الوطني والأجنبي، وثالثها نشأة هذا الأدب في الأدبين الغربي والعربي، وتطوُّره في الأدب العربي، في مرحلتين: أولاهما مرحلة النشأة والتأسيس، وثانيتهما مرحلة التأصيل، والتعرُّف إلى أعلام هذا الأدب وإنتاجهم، وخصائص هذا الإنتاج، في هاتين المرحلتين.
اقتضى إنجاز هذا البحث إجراء دراسة في مجموعة قضايا مركزيَّة تمثِّل إشكاليته، وهي: تحديد مفهوم هذا الأدب وتمييزه من ثقافة الأطفال، ومن باقي أنواع الأدب. خصوصيَّة هذا الأدب وخصائصه ودور المتلقِّي، الذي تتغيَّر مراحله العمريَّة، في إعطائه هويته، ووظيفته في تربية الطِّفل وتنميته، واقع نقده، تاريخيَّة هذا النَّوع الأدبي، والإجابة عن السؤال عما إذا كان قديماً أو حديثاً في الأدبين الغربي والعربي؟ والإفادة من التُّراثين:الوطني والأجنبي: الاستلهام والترجمة... وإن كان حديثاً، فماذا كان يقدَّم للأطفال قديماً؟ التجربة الأدبية التي أفضت إلى نشأة هذا الأدب وتطوُّره، ومسار هذا التطوُّر في الأدب العربي الحديث، وأبرز أعلام هذا المسار، أدبيَّة هذا الأدب ومنظومة القيم التربوية...
