صلاح الدين ذُهني: أديب وقصصي مصري، وُلِدَ سنة ١٩٠٩م، وتخرَّج في كلية الآداب بجامعة القاهرة. عُيِّنَ أمينًا لدار «الأوبرا» المصرية، وسكرتيرًا لمجلة «آخر ساعة».
كتب العديد من القصص، يُقال إنها بلغت أكثر من ثلاثمائة قصة قصيرة، ضمتها مؤلفاته، منها: «أقوى من الحب»، «ذات مساء»، «ضحكات إبليس»، «الكأس السابعة»، و«في الدرجة الثامنة» وغيرها، وله أيضًا: «مصر بين الاحتلال والثورة»، و«صور من أوروبا»، وله مسرحية مترجمة، كما ترجمت بعض أعماله إلى اللغتين الإنجليزية والفرنسية.
وكان لصلاح الدين ذهني إسهام في النقد، وخاض على صفحات الجرائد والمجلات معارك أدبية، لعل من أشهرها السِّجَال الساخن بينه وبين «سيد قطب» حول أدب محمود تيمور ونجيب محفوظ سنة ١٩٤٤م.
وحينما ألمَّ به المرض، سافر ذهني إلى لندن متداويًا، فأدركته الوفاة هناك سنة ١٩٥٣م. وفي الذكرى الثامنة لوفاته، أصدر كبار كُتاب القصة مجموعة مختارة من قصصه تخليدًا لذكراه.

كانت حياة «مصطفى» تسير هادئةً مستقرةً, مع زوجته الحسناء ووسط أولاده الصغار, وقد تصوَّر أن صفحة حبِّه القديم قد طُويت للأبد, لكنه يلتقي بحبيبته التي سبق أن تركتْه من سنوات بعد أن أغراها رنين المال؛ فتزوجت أحد الذين يملكونه بكثرة علَّها تجد السعادة. وهكذا اضطربت حياة «مصطفى»؛ حيث طفق يلتقي بحبيبته كلما أمكنته الظروف, حتى لاحظ مَن حوله تشتُّت نفسه. ثم يقرر في يومٍ أن يُطفئ شوقه ويتزوج محبوبته تاركًا أسرته غير مبالٍ. ولكنه يكتشف بعد فترة بسيطة أن هناك أمورًا أهم وأقوى من الحب؛ فكيف نسي مسئولياته تجاه أسرته؟! وكيف تخلَّى عن زوجته الوفية بعد سنوات طوال؟! فيصحِّح خطأه مدركًا نزقه, ويعود إلى أسرته تائبًا عن طيشه. هذه القصة وغيرها تجدها في هذه المجموعة القصصية؛ التي كتبها الأديب «صلاح الدين ذهني» في بداية حياته الفنية.
