"صوت المساجين العالي داخل القفص الزجاجي يمزق الصمت. يرسلون نداء الحرية في المحكمــة يستبشر أهلهم بالنصر، تهتز القاعــة، فلا يثبت فيها سوى المنصة، تعلوها كتلٌ من اللحم ثابتةٌ كالأشجار مطفأةُ الوجوه، لا يضيء فيها سوى التجاعيد، ضربت جذورهم أقاصي الأرض. وصلت إلى قصر الأميــر، يصرخ الحاجب:
«محكمـة»
يعود الصمت مرة أخرى، يترافع أمامهم محامٍ بقوانينَ واضحةِ البيان، يردون دفاعه بألفاظ غير مفهومـة، ينفث أهالـي المساجين أنفاسهم الحارة في القاعة، فتتحجر الدموع مستسلمة في عيونهـم،"
