يذرع الشارع ذهابًا وإيابًا، كان صباحًا هادئًا بعد ليل طويل شاق، الشوارع رطبة، بِرَكٌ من المياه في منتصف الطريق، قطرات خجولة عالقة على الأشجار، الطقس بارد وشديد الرطوبة، أما الشمس فكانت تكشف عن نقابها ثم تعود وتختفي بين الغيوم. ظل يمشي بعد صلاة الفجر دون أن تحمله تانك القدمان إلى مكان، ظلت مخيلته تسترجع الليلة الماضية، وصوت وابل المطر ذاك، كانت السماء تعزف لحنها، تحوطه بالبركة.
ظل مذهولاً بحجم هذه السماء العظيمة، من الجرأة التي تملكته ليلة البارحة. هل كان هو ذاك؟! أم كان ملاكًا من السماء ينطق بلسانه، أم شيطانًا من الأرض كما يعتقد أبوه. امتلأ بالرهبة والشجاعة، كان مُضطرًا أن يتوقف عند هذا الحد، أن يكون هو... لن ينسى تلك الليالي التي كان فيها يتوق إلى هذا الصباح؛ أن يصبح حرًّا من كل ذلك الملقَى على كاهله. ظن يائسًا من أن هذا لن يأتي، أنه لن يكونه، كان يحتقر ذلك الضعف وتلك التفاصيل التي ظلت تغطيه دون أن يجدها تشبهه، لم تكن نابعة منه. كان صعبًا أن يتراجع عن طريقٍ عبره حتى أوشك أن يكون حياته كلها، وكان الأشد صعوبة أن يصل إلى النهاية بعد أن أيقن أنها لم تكن طريقه.
ربما بعد هذا لا يعلم أين هو ذاهب، تمسّك بالعزيمة، راحت حياته تجول في ذاكرته، استعاد كل شيء في تلك اللحظة حتى لحظة غضب والدته بسبب ثوبه الملطخ بطين السيل.
لم يكن ليختار كل هذه التفاصيل التي عاش، الأرض التي أصبحت وطنًا، والبيت الذي دخله مولودًا بين ذراعي والدته التي لم يختر أن يكون ابنًا لها، أن يكون فردًا من هذه الطائفة، يحمل هويتها وإرثها وآلامها وثأرها ووعدها. كان الحِمْل ثقيلاً على الإنسان الذي حاول أن يتحرر من معتقدات طائفته وتاريخها، أراد أن يكون ذلك المولود الذي لم يُصبغ بعد، أن يغتسل من كل هذا الذي قسّم الإنسانية إلى هويات تحمل ثاراتها ومجدها واستحقاقها وامتلاكها للحق وإلغاءها للآخر. كان التحرر من كل تلك التفاصيل التي لم يخترها طريقًا ممكنًا إلى الإنسان على صورته الأولى.
