لقد حُذرنا من أنها لن تكون رحلة إلى حديقة الحيوانات. في البدء، أُصِبنا بصعوبة في التنفس لأننا لم نكن قد تأقلمنا مع الهواء الخفيف على ارتفاع تسعة آلاف وخمسمئة قدم فوق سطح البحر. في الحقيقة، لقد عانينا لثلاث ساعاتٍ في عبور غابة مطيرة كثيرة البخار للوصول إلى هذه النقطة. في بعض الأوقات انزلقنا قليلاً على الطريق وغالباً ما تسلقنا جذوع الأشجار، ومن أجل تفادي النمل الأحمر أدخلنا سراويلنا في جواربنا، وكانت أيدينا تتعرق في القفازات التي كنا نحتاج إليها للإمساك بالنباتات وتسلق الشائك منها.
في مقدمة مجموعتنا، فتح دليل سياحي طريقه بواسطة منجل بين النباتات المتشعبة وسيقان الخيزران. وعندما ظننا أننا لن نستطيع التوغل أكثر في هذه الغابة المنيعة، قابلنا ثلاثة مقتفي أثر. وضعنا حقائبنا على الأرض، أخذنا كاميراتنا، وتبعناهم بهدوء. فجأة سمعنا صوت شيءٍ يتكسر فوقنا، نظرنا إلى الأعلى فإذا بها أنثى غوريلا تحدق إلينا.
هنا، على الحدود بين رواندا والكونغو وأوغندا، في آخر ملجأ لغوريلا الجبل، تحركنا إلى الأمام بحذر ووقفنا على حافة منخفض صغير. وبكل غطرسة، جلس في وسطه أغاشيا فضي الظهر يبلغ من العمر أربعة وثلاثين عاماً، لقد كان زعيم هذه المنطقة.
أحد ذرية أغاشيا، ربما يبلغ الثامنة عشرة، تعالج من جرح بالغ في كتفه. كان قد تعارك ووالده من أجل السيطرة على القطيع، ومن الواضح أنه هُزِم. بقي أغاشيا يراقب عن كثب الذكرين الآخرين البالغين – وهما أيضاً من ذريته – في القطيع، واهتم اهتماماً بالغاً بحريمه – إن جاز التعبير – المكون من ست إناث بالغات. كُنّ بين الخيزران. مستلقيات على الأرض، بين ذريتهن التي كان البعض منها يقوم بشقلبة هوائية أو يشتبك في معارك وهمية. كنا نعرف أنه يجب علينا أن نقف على الأقل بضع ياردات بعيداً، لكن قطيع الغوريلات جعل هذا مستحيلاً. عادت الإناث من الأشجار، ومشى المراهقون الهوينى بيننا، بينما وقف أحد فضيي الظهر الصغار على قائمتيه الخلفيتين ليمسك بغصن شجرة قريب.
