«توفيق الحكيم» كتابٌ من تأليف إسماعيل أدهم، وإبراهيم ناجي، وهو دراسةٌ نقديّة، جاءت في قسمَين، الأوّل منها كتبه أدهم، حيث قدّم دراسة أدبيّة في توفيق الحكيم تعتمد على طرائق البحث التحليلي والمنهجي. وتناول إبراهيم ناجي في القسم الثاني حياة توفيق الحكيم، واستعرض سياق النّهضة الأدبيّة العربيّة وعلاقتها في ظهوره.
تقدّم الكتاب آراءٌ قيلت في الدكتور إسماعيل أدهم، في الأدب العربي المعاصر، ثمّ تناول الفن القصصي والمسرحي في الأدب العربي الحديث، بعد ذلك تطرّق إلى ما يلي: «توفيق الحكيم»، حياتُه، شخصيّته، أعماله الأدبيّة،آراؤه. فنّه في مسرحيّاته وقصصه، تآثاره وكتاباته،حياته النفسيّة، من كتبه- تأثيره.
ويقول إسماعيل أدهم في مطلع الكتاب : الذّهنيّة العربيّة تنقصها الطّاقة على التجرّد من الذّاتيّة، وجعل الظّواهر الموضوعيّة في طبيعتها، فمن هنا كان الفن العربي مظهرًا لتفتّح ذاتيّة الفنان عن نفسه، ومن هنا كان في أغراضه فرديًا، لأن الفنّان يعيش في حاضره، ولا يتجلّى له الأشياء في تطورها التاريخي، ولهذا كانت القصة والمسرحيّة غريبة على فن العرب.
