قام بتأليف هذا الكتاب مجموعةٌ من الكتّاب وهم: عبد الجواد عبد المتعال ومحمد عاطف، ومحمّد نصّار، وأحمد إبراهيم. قدّموا من خلاله صورةً عامةً عن حالة اللغة العربية قبل الإسلام وبعده، وسعتها لتدوين العلوم على كثرتها واختلافها، وفضلها على المدنية التي عمت جميع الممالك الإسلامية إبَّان عظمتها واتساعها.
هو بمثابة رسالةٍ موجّهةٍ لطلّاب الثانوية كي ترشدهم نحو جماليّات اللغة العربية وأصالتها، فأتبعوا عملهم بمختارات من النظم والنثر، وتراجمَ لبعض المشهورين من الشعراء والكتَّاب والخطباء والعلماء والفلاسفة، الذين ترسو بصماتهم في الأدب العربي عبر مختلف العصور.
تناول الكتاب خصائص اللغة العربية وآدابها، وقدّم شروحات توضيحيّة لها، على اختلاف المجالات، من خطابة وشعر ونثر، وعلوم ومعارف متنوعةٍ ازدهرت على لسان الضاد آنذاك. وكان ذلك منذ فترة ما قبلَ الإسلام، ثمّ وقوفًا بأثر الإسلام على اللغة في ذروة انتشاره حتى العصر العباسي، كما يبيّن الكتاب مآثر الإسلام على اللغة وآدابها، من ناحية الإنتشار، والتهذيب، وغير ذلك من فضل بانَ في أغلب أوجهه على فنّ الخطابة والشعر.
