صدرت هذه الرواية في طبعتها الأولى بالعام 1983، في دمشق، وتجري أحداثها في النصف الأول من خمسنيات القرن العشرين، في منطقة البطيحة السورية المحاذية لبحيرة طبريا عند خط الحدود الفاصل بين فلسطين وسورية . حيث يصل إلى هذه المنطقة معلّمٌ سوريّ كان يُدّرس اللّغة الفرنسيّة في ثانويات العاصمة . هذا المعلم سخطت عليه سلطةُ بلده الديكتاتورية، لأنه أبى أن يُقسم يمين الولاء للحاكم الفرد، فعاقبته بتخفيض مرتبته إلى معلّم في مدرسة ابتدائية وإرساله الى هذه المنطقة المسكونة بالأوبئة والتّخلف والإقطاع وسطوة العسكر الذين صار قائدهم العام هو الحاكم الفرد. فما الذي سيفعله المواطن المتّمرد، وما الذي ستفعله به مخابرات بلده؟ هذا هو ما تحكيه هذه الرواية.
