«ڤكتور ديلار» شاب وسيمٌ وطموح، تزوّج من «ماري دملفو» عن علاقة حب، وهي امرأةٌ قرويَّة، بسيطةٌ، عزيزة النفس. اعترى قلبَه الملل، وحالةٌ من الأُلْفة واعتياد الزّوجة والبيت، أثّرت على مشاعره، صار ينظر إلى الزّوجة الوفيّة على أنّها قرويّةٌ ساذجة.
لم يقدّم مبادرات لحماية العلاقة، كما لم.يبدِ أيّ مقاومةٍ لجاذبيّة «أليس»، التي كانت متزوّجة، قلبت كيانه بجمالها، ورقّتها وزينتها. لم يستطع أن يكبح جماح عاطفته، فترك أولاده وزوجته، مسافراً معها إلى باريس.
كانت ماري تعرف بأمر «الباريسية الحسناء»، وتكشف ما بينهما، فلم تنطلي عليها أعذارَه بالسّفر، من أجل الدّراسة.
تتبعه إلى باريس، بحماسةٍ يولّدها الحب، والرغبة في الحفاظ على كيان العائلة. فيرجع «ڤكتور» إلى وعيه، بعدما تنقذه ماري من محاولته للانتحار، هو وحبيبته. فيكتشف زيف مشاعره، ويعود إلى القرية رفقةَ زوجته، مقتنعًا أنّها حبّه الحقيقي.
