جرَى التاريخ على أن يُطلق اسم أيام العرب على ذلك النزاع الجاهِليِّ الذي كان يشب بين القبائل؛ لما فيه من أعمال الفروسية التي لا تقتصر على السيف والرمح والطَّعن والضرب، يعرض ما في تلك الأعمال من التضحية والعفو والكرم وإباء الضَّيم..
لكنّه لم يخرج في مجموعه عن مناوشات تُريق الدماء، وتُوهن القوى، وتُهدِر الطاقات، مما أطمع فيهم جيرانهم من الفرس والروم، فأَخافوهم، وحاولوا بَسْط سلطانهم عليهم، وسلّطوا بعضهم على بعض، وأذكَوا فُرقتهم، ليظلوا في ضعفهم ووهنهم.
صحيح أن تلك الحروب كانت تنطوي على شَيْءٍ من الفروسية، ويبدو في بعضها شَيْءٌ من مكارم الأخلاق، وأنها خلَّفت لنا مادة طيِّبة من الأشعار والخطب والحِكم والأمثال، إلا أنها كانت تثور بين الأمة الواحدة وتمزقها، وإن كان القليل منها لقاءات بين العرب وسواهم، كما في لقاء ذي قار، الذي أوشك أن يكون حربًا بين أمة وأمة ويومًا حقيقيًّا، بدا فيه ما يضطرب في صدور العرب المتنازعين من الأمل في الوحدة، والتطلع إلى دولة تضم المتفرق وتجمع الشَّتات. يبدو هذا الأمل فيما أحس به بعضهم بعد النصر على الفرس، من أن الواجب كان يحتم أن تشترك في هذا اللقاء العظيم قبائلُ معدٍّ كلها، لا بنو بكر بن وائل وحدهم، يعبر عنه شاعرهم إذ يقول بأُمنِية تلك الوحدة:
لو أَنَّ كلَّ مَعَدٍّ كان شارَكنا في يوم ذِي قارَ ما أَخْطاهمُ الشَّرفُ
ولم يزل هذا الأمل يضطرب في صدور العَرب، حتى وحَّدهم الإسلام، وأماتَ الثارات، وقضى على تلك الحروب القَبَليَّة الصغيرة التي سميت أيامًا، وأبدلها بكفاح ضخم، دخلوه سيفًا واحدًا التقى بالقوى الكبيرة، دِينًا وعقيدةً ونورًا وتفانيًا في الجماعة، استحق أن يسمى أيامًا.
وقد رأيت أن أعرض هذه الأيام التي التقى العرب فيها مع غيرهم، والتي تصور عظمة العرب وقوتهم، وتضحيتَهم ونُبلَ أخلاقهم..، مما يردِّده التاريخ أمثالاً باقية عطِرة، لا تمحوها الأيام كما أَخْفَتَت صوت تلك المناوشات.
