منذ إعتلاء قنسطانز الثاني عرش بلاد الروم، وهو محزون مهموم، لا يرى إلا عابس الوجه، شارد النظرات، شديد القلق، يقلب في رأسه أفكارا كثيرة تملؤه ثم تتركه وتذهب عنه، لتخلي مكانها لأفكار غيرها، باحثاً عن رأي ينتهي إليه ويريح نفسه الثائرة. أيام طويلة وهو على هذه الحال، لا ينطبق له جفن ولا يقر له جنب، يذهب مرة إلى مكان بعيد عن القصر، لا يسمع فيه غير أصوات الأمواج التي تضرب السور العالي الملتف حول القلعة، يجلس وحده يمد فكره بعيداً بعيداً. وتارة يصعد في برج من الأبراج المقامة في ذلك السور، ينظر منه إلى البحر الواسع، والسماء المنبسطة، والنجوم والكواكب، ويحادثها بعينيه الغائرتين مثل قلبه، لعلها تقرأ ما في صدره وتلهمه الحل الذي يرضيه. وتارة أخرى يأوى إلى مخدعه، ويقضي ليله يتقلب في جوانبه، يحاول أن يجذب النوم إليه، علّه يرى فيه حلماً شافياً، يزيحُ عن صدره الأثقال الضخمة التي انحطت عليه وأوجعته.
