والوديعة نموذج فذ في الحوار الداخلي، والتحليل النفسي، يقول ديستويفسكي عنها أنها تجري على الأسلوب الفريد الذي لم يسبقه إليه سوى فكتور هيجو في عمله العظيم: "آخر يوم في حياة محكوم عليه بالإعدام"، فالبطل في قمة المأساة، يسترجع مراحل علاقته بعروسه التي انتحرت، ولم يزل جثمانها مسجي أمامه، ويحلل هذه العلاقة المحمومة التي يتجاذبها قطبان هما العشق العنيف والرغبة في السيطرة، وكيف صارت هذه العلاقة عذاباً وجحيماً من التناقض انتهى بانتحار الفتاة الوديعة المتكبرة.
و"حادث مؤسف للغاية" نمط فريد أيضاً في التحليل النفسي والتصوير الساخر للتناقض الذي وقع فيه أرستقراطي شاب أراد أن يمارس ما خاله منتهى الديمقراطية، فأدى ذلك إلى أعجب المواقف وأوخم العواقب.
