أعلم أن العنوان قد يثير الدهشة، ولكن زميلي بقسم التاريخ بجامعة ييل "تيموثي سنايدر" قد سبقني إلى هذا الموضوع في كتابه (On Tyranny)، كما فعل "سينيكا" منذ زمن بعيد في كتابه (On the Shortness of Life) . ومع ذلك، فأكثر ما يقلقني هم معجبو "كارل فون كلاوزفيتز" وأنا واحد منهم. لقد وضع كتابه On War (1832) المنشور بعد وفاته المعيار لكل الكتابات اللاحقة عن ذلك الموضوع وإستراتيجيته الكبرى الضرورية الملازمة له. إن مبرري لتأليف كتاب آخر مماثل هو الإيجاز - وهو ليس من نقاط قوة "كلاوزفيتز": يغطي هذا الكتاب سنوات أكثر من كتاب On War ولكن حجمه أقل من نصفه تقريبًا.
