النظر في اللغة وطرق درسها جد قديم؛ وللعرب في ذلك آثار كبيرة معروفة علينا أن نتدبرها ونقوّمها لإبراز دورهم في تاريخ الدراسات اللغوية، وللائتناس بما يصلح من الأصول اللغوية التي أسسوها أصولاً لعلم اللغة الحديث.
ولكن الدراسات اللغوية في أوروبا وأمريكا نشطت ونشاط الثقافة الغربية بعامة، فأصبحت ـ منذ حوالي نصف قرن ـ “علماً” مستقلاً، متفرداً متخصص الوسائل. ولقد نقلنا عن الغرب كثيراً من العلوم التي سبقنا إليها، وجاوزنا في كثير منها، طور الأخذ إلى طور التأليف الأصيل؛ ودراساتنا الأدبية والنقدية خير حظاً من الدراسات اللغوية فقد تعرفنا على كثير مما أحدثه الغربيون فيها، وانتفعنا به، وصدرت عن باحثينا دراسات أصيلة على هدى النظر الأدبي الحديث.
ولكن تعريفنا بالنشاط اللغوي العلمي في أحدث صوره لا يزال تعريفاً هيناً غامض القسمات، ينتظر الجهود الجادة المتلاحقة من الأفراد والهيئات.
وهذا الكتاب في “علم اللغة” محاولة أقدمها في هذا السبيل؛ وهو كتاب يحدد أسلوب عرضه للموضوعات، ومنهجَ تناوله للمسائل، أنه “مقدمة للقارىء العربي.
