تناول هذا البحث النواحي الاقتصادية والسياسية وجانبا من النواحي الاجتماعية. وكانت الغاية الأساسية منه هي إلقاء الضوء على الإستحقاقات المتتالية التي مر بها لبنان، بدءا من معركة الاستقلال، مرورا بأزمتي 1958 و1969، وصولا إلى الأحداث الدامية التي عصفت به عام 1975، وانتهاء باتفاق الطائف. وتبيان الموقف السعودي تجاه لبنان إبان هذه الإستحقاقات. فالمملكة العربية السعودية في سياستها الخارجية تنطلق من ثوابت محددة تقوم على عدم التدخل في الشؤون الداخلية للدول الأخرى. لكن من منطلق الحرص على الوحدة العربية، تسعى لحل خلافات البيت العربي ضمن إطار جامعة الدول العربية، وباتت الأمور في لبنان تسير من تسوية لأخرى ما بين عامي 1975 و1987 إلى أن نجحت المملكة في جمع النواب اللبنانيين على صيغة ما سمي بوثيقة الوفاق الوطني «إتفاق الطائف» وأعلن رسميا بعدها انتهاء الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية.
