شكّل السقوط الرمزي لتمثال الدكتاتور في التاسع من نيسان عام 2003م لحظة فارقة في تأريخ العراق، والشيعة فيه بشكل خاص، اذ كانت إيذاناً بفتح أسئلة لا تنتهي عن طبيعة الصورة التي سيكون عليه النظام وموقف العراقيين الشيعة منه. ففي الوقت الذي عاش الشيعة مرغمين أو راغبين، في ظل عقيدة وتأريخ من الرفض والابتعاد عن السلطة قبل 2003م، بدا انهم في صدارة المسؤولية لبناء الدولة والأمة فيما بعدها. في هذا الكتاب يسعى الكاتب في البحث عن طبيعة استجابة العرب الشيعة لمتطلبات الحكم من جهة، والتعامل مع التراث من جهة ثانية.
والكاتب مهتمّ بالإجابة عن العديد من الأسئلة منها: ما ديناميات الانقطاع والاتصال بين الشيعة، والآخر (المذهبي والقومي)؟ وما إسهام الشيعة في بناء الدولة وبناء الأمة في العراق نجاحاً واخفاقاً؟ على أمل ان يكون هذا الكتاب إضافة أكاديمية جادة في حقل السوسيولوجيا السياسية الشيعية.
