"سيرة ذاتية غير اعتيادية لرئيس جامعة القدس ومفكّر سياسي بارز متحدّر من عائلة ذات نفوذ، جمع فيها رؤيته السياسية الشاملة وحياته المغرقة في الخصوصية ودمج بينهما بطريقة غير مألوفة.
شرع في كتابة رواية خيالية مطوّلة فقط ليقنعها بالعودة معه إلى القدس.
تتوالى الأحداث وتحلّ الكوارث بفلسطين وعروبتها. ولم يعد هدفه من كتابة الرواية إقناع لوسي بالعودة بل أصبحت الرواية في حد ذاتها قضية كبيرة قضية شعب تعرّض للمذابح والمجازر والتهجير والتقسيم والنفي. قضية شعب أنجب قائداً ظلّت علامات الاستفهام والتعجّب ترافقه منذ انطلاقة ثورته مروراً بمعاهدات سلامه وانتهاء بموته المريبرواية خيالية تأخّر كاتبها كثيراً في إيجاد خاتمة لها، في ترسيم نهائي لأبطالها، تأخّر حتى اكتملت أحداث الواقع من حوله.يكتب خيالاً ويعيش واقعاً بكل ما فيه من غربة وعذاب وحنين وحبّ جارف، هو ذلك الفلسطيني الذي عرّشت الغربة في روحه وهو يجوب شوارع لندن طلباً للعلم والحياة، والذي أحبّ لوسي ابنة استاذ الفلسفة الأساسي في جامعة أكسفورد وتزوّجها وأنجب منها.
وفي الواقع أيضاً الكاتب الفلسطيني، ويهودي يدعى آموس أوز يلتقيان ويكتشفان أنهما أمضيا طفولتهما في حيين متجاورين متصارعين حتى الموت.
غاب العرب عن تجربة طفولة آوز. وغاب عالم آوز عن تجربة الكاتب. ألم يكن كل طرف من طرفي الصراع منغمساً كليّاً في مأساته الخاصة بحيث غفل عن قصة الآخر؟
أوليس العجز عن تصوّر حياة الآخر هو لب الصراع؟
هنا تحديداً فك الكاتب عقدة الرواية الخيالية وحدّد مصائر أبطالها بشكل نهائي ووضع الخاتمة أيضاً."
