بين دفتي هذا الكتاب أخذ المؤلف على عاتقه مشكوراً تجلية الحقيقة ناصعة حول مسألة معرفة الأسماء والكنى والألقاب التي اعتراها الإبهام، وأصابها الإلتباس، فضلاً على مطولات الأسفار وفروعها، وأورد ما لا بد من بيانه من هذه الأسماء والكنى والألقاب التي قد ذكرها المصنفون خلال العهود، ولم يبينوا كثيراً من معانيها، بحيث قد يشكل على كثير من القراء من العلماء والفقهاء والمثقفين، ولم يَألُ جهداً في بذل ما وسعه من ذكر أصول لا بد أن تُذكَر، ومن ذكر فروع من الواجب أن تُبيَّن؛ وذلك حتى يُطبَّق النص على حقيقته التي لا تحتاج بعد ذلك إلى جهد، ولا إلى بذل، ولا إلى وقت.
ولعل بيان كثير أو جل الأسماء والكنى والألقاب وكذلك الأماكن والبلدان، هذا دون ريب قد تُبنَى عليه أحكام شرعية أو سياسية أو علمية أو لغوية أو نحوية، وواقع الأمر، فإنه إذا لم يقم المؤلف أو غيره من المتخصصين ببيان هذا، فلا شك أنه قد يختلط شيء في شيء آخر؛ فلا تتضح آنذاك الأمور التي يجب أن تتضح، ومن هنا كانت أهمية الكتاب جلية وفائدة سخية.
